Consecon Pastoral Charge is a two-point charge comprised of Carrying Place and Consecon United Churches located in two small communities just 8 kilometres apart. Although our people have much in common, each community has its own distinct personality.
Carrying Place United Church
Carrying Place centres around the Old Portage Road, a road once used by First Nations peoples to portage their canoes between the Bay of Quinte and Weller's Bay; the oldest road in continuous use in Canada. As such, the area boasts many century homes. The village, though small in population, sprawls across a considerable area in two counties - Northumberland County and Prince Edward County. While the atmosphere is rural, Carrying Place is very close to Trenton, Brighton, and Belleville, and is a 7-minute drive to Highway 401, which gives easy access to larger urban centres.
Carrying Place is the smaller of the two facilities. It has a more intimate feeling about it and is a very lovely worship space. It is located on the North side of Old Portage Road just East of the Loyalist Parkway (County Road 33) in Carrying Place, Ontario. Attached at the rear is a hall which is used for various church functions as well as a meeting place for various community groups.
In 1986 Peggy Dymond Leavey wrote a small book compiling as much history of Carrying Place United (originally Methodist) Church as could be discerned. An updated edition was released in 2011. She has kindly provided us with an excerpt from
Consecon United Church
Our church is at 224 Mill Street (County Road 29) in the hamlet of Consecon. Consecon is located in a growing rural area of some 2500 residents, and is the gateway to beautiful Prince Edward County, known widely as "The County" and home to burgeoning wine, tourist, and artist/artisan industries. Agriculture still plays a prominent role in the area. The hamlet is located just off Loyalist Parkway on the shores of Weller's Bay. The area is populated by a mix of young families, middle-aged working and retired folk, and seniors. Belleville, Brighton, and Trenton (Quinte West) are all within a 30-minute drive as is a connection to Highway 401. Toronto is a two-hour drive, and Kingston is about one hour away.
Consecon Church is much larger than Carrying Place Church, and is used for larger joint services, such as Christmas Eve and Easter. Very traditional in its layout, with an upper balcony, it can accommodate many more worshippers than Carrying Place. It is located on the East side of Mill Street in the hamlet of Consecon, in Prince Edward County, Ontario. Attached on the north side is a hall which is used for various church functions as well as a meeting place for various community groups.
